Sherried Yams Choose yams of approximately the same size and shape to ensure even cooking. 6-8 large yams 2 tablespoons sherry 1/3 cup maple syrup, or to taste. 1/4 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder 1/4 teaspoon ginger Salt and ground black pepper to taste 1 Golden Delicious apple, peeled, cored and thinly sliced Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly oil a 9-inch or other baking dish that can be brought to the table for serving. Bake yams in a ring on yam mixture. Fill in center of ring by arranging remaining apple slices in concentric circles to form a rosette (if you have any small or uneven apple pieces, put them in the center.) Brush apples lightly with remaining maple syrup. Bake until apple slices are soft and edges are lightly browned, about 45 minutes. Serves 8
